ICERD was adopted by the United Nations in 1965 to eliminate racial discrimination in all its forms. The Convention aims to promote equality and human rights for all racial and ethnic groups.
States parties are obliged to take legal measures to prevent discrimination and to protect the rights of persons affected by racial discrimination. They must also submit regular reports on the implementation of the Convention to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination monitors states‘ compliance with the Convention and makes recommendations for improvement. Through the review of state reports and the possibility of receiving individual complaints, it attempts to promote effective measures against racial discrimination.
